Why is It so Difficult to Get a Scholarship?

Education is a must for everyone in the world. They have the same rights to have proper or even better education. There are a lot of ways to achieve proper and better education, one of which is by applying scholarship. Scholarship is available for everyone who has ability to study and change the world. Scholarships in Indonesia are available in many different types, one of which is the scholarship for undergraduate students.
Higher education such as universities in Indonesia almost has the same problem: expense. Many of the people in Indonesia are having trouble to study better because of money’s lacking. They are also unable to get better studies because of the school fee is expensive, the book is expensive with the minimum price is around Rp 150.000, and learning facility which is overpriced such as laptop with the cheapest price is around Rp. 3.700.000 since this is the most crucial stuff to be owed by students. Therefore, many of them are working while studying. The result is they end up to work in order to finance their study rather than to focus in studying. They should be studying to work. However, the fact says that they are working to study. Indonesia as one of developing country is having this problem. As a developing country, Indonesia is fighting to fix its education system by providing many scholarships; for government or non-government institution. LPDP (Lembaga Pengembangan Dana Pendidikan) as one of the government institution is given the right and duty to manage education fund by providing undergraduate scholarship as one of their program (Tan, 2014). LPDP provides scholarship for undergraduate student notably for Indonesian undergraduate student to take the higher education such as attending university in Indonesia and also cooperates with some universities in the world. LPDP finances students to study in famous and the best universities in Indonesia such as Indonesia University or other universities in other countries, such as Queensland University to study appropriates with their major they concerned.
As well as the government institution, Indonesia has many non-government institutions which provide scholarship for undergraduate student. For example is Beasiswa Djarum. Beasiswa Djarum is a form from Djarum, one of the local products of cigarettes in Indonesia, who gives distribution for education in Indonesia. It gives undergraduate student tuition fee included book fee, and so on. Beasisw aDjarum focuses on giving scholarship for student who has no enough money to continue his or her higher study but they have ability and special skill such as having higher IQ and has been participated in many education Olympiads (unknown, 2015). Another example of non- government institution that gives scholarships is from the banks in Indonesia, for instance, beasiswa Mandiri and beasiswa BCA. Both of them are non-government banks who give scholarship for undergraduate student by financing all the study tuition and life tuition during their study. Non-government institution usually choose low-income students who longing to continue the study (Ratih, 2015)
Many of students in the world are hesitant to take the opportunity to study aboard whereas there are a lot of chances to be achieved by them. As well as local government, foreign government also provides scholarship for undergraduate student (Zacky, 2014).  Foreign countries which are its government provided scholarships for undergraduate student is United States of America. According to official website of AMINEF, AMINEF is one of the examples of United States of America government’s program who provides scholarships for undergraduate students. With their program called AMINEF UGRAD, many undergraduate students in developing countries are able to join and apply scholarships. They are given the opportunity to study in universities in U.S.A and study their concern deeper. Other government institution in other country which also provides scholarships for undergraduate studentsis Japan. One of the physic lecturers in State University of Malang, Mr. Anugrah Ricky Wijaya maintains that Monbusho is one of scholarships given by government institution of Japan and Makita scholarship is one of scholarships given by non-government institution in Japan. Both are providing scholarships for undergraduate students who are willing to study higher in Japan (Wijaya, 2014).
Other problems of why undergraduate students are hesitant to apply scholarship are the application. Mostly institutions giving scholarship are having the same requirements for the application. However, the students’ unknown about requirements is the main problem. If only students know and understand what they need to study, they will be able to pass through the scholarship’s requirements (Zacky, 2014). If we draw out the straight line, requirements of applying scholarships are almost the same even different types of scholarships. The main requirements to be fulfilled are TOEFL or IELTS certificate with minimum score is 500 for TOEFL and 5,0 for IELTS, online application, statement of purposes, letter of recommendation, transcript, resume of CV, financial statement, health form, and tests’ scores (unknown,  2014). Those can be prepared for less than a month. Mario A. De Anda from Hispanic Scholarship Fund that for all those requirements, writing a good statement of purpose or essay will affect too much the selecting team to decide whether she or he passes the selection section. In addition, Kimberly Hall from the United NegroCollege Fund administers said that writing good essay means the content of the essay should have quality and point on how we should get the scholarship. Bringing the selection team’s emotion up also can be one of the jackpots. However, in recent days, the selection team chooses the strong and innovative essay rather than emotional essay (Tanabe, Kelly and Gen, 2000).

Education becomes the parameter of comprehension and competence of people in a country. Thus, Indonesia as developing country has been trying to develop the education system by providing scholarship, especially for undergraduate student whether government and non-government have provided scholarship. Both institutions have cooperated to develop the education system to produce human being who can continue and make a better future for their country. However, unknown of student about the scholarship’s information itself prevent them for getting the chance. They should realize that scholarship in Indonesia has been developed better. It affects the others. They become unaware about how to apply without careful in filling the requirements.  That is why after knowing the steps, students will do not afraid to apply scholarship. All you need is courage. Good luck!
