Virginity Test: Inappropriate Test for High School Students

Virginity test is a test that is conducted to determine whether a female person is a virgin or not. The test result depends on the condition of the female’s hymen on the assumption that she is not a virgin if her hymen is torn. Since it needs to test on a female’s private part of body, people find it controversial to conduct this virginity test, especially for high school students. The pro side believes that to conduct a virginity test is important and compulsory for them since it is not harmful and it can prevent students from free-sex. However, there are still some stronger arguments standing in believe that virginity test should not be conducted to high school students because it against human rights and it can affect students’ psychological and physical condition.
The first reason why it is a big mistake to conduct virginity test to high school students is that it really against human rights. Undang Undang Dasar 1945 verse 28 B line 2 stated that every child has the right to live, grow and develop and also has the right of the protection from violation and discrimination. By conducting virginity test to high school students, it means that they will be tested on their hymen, which is a very private part of body for female. If the hymen is interpreted to be broken or torn, where only the hymenal remnants are found, then the woman fails the test and it is believed that she has already engaged in sexual intercourse (Anonymous, 2010). Later, this test’s result will determine whether the students are allowed to enter high school or not. This is very unfair. How come this kind of result can determine the success of high school students? What is the point anyway to conduct this kind of test? Does it mean that they are not allowed to continue their study if they do not pass the test? Undang Undang Dasar 1945 verse 31 line 1 stated that every citizen has the right get the education. From this regulation, we can clearly see and say that not even a virginity test can prevent students to get education. In other words, it surely is against human right if people start considering to pass this test as a valid requirement to enter school.
The second argument why virginity test should not be mandatory for high school students is that it can affect psychological side of the students themselves. The condition of the hymen is the determiner whether they can pass the test or not. Yet, we cannot just generally conclude that a person is not a virgin because she does not pass the test.  Hymen can be broken not only because of a sexual intercourse, but also because of some other reasons. Participating in sports like cycling, horseback riding or gymnastic can cause hymen tears. Therefore, whether or not a woman’s hymen is intact cannot be physical proof or whether or not she has engaged in sexual intercourse. Yet, once they are told that they are not virgin, people will look at them in different.  In this case, of course they will feel confuse because they are being marked as people who do bad things, even they do not. Let us take example from an illustration; there is a girl who is an athlete that has to lift very heavy materials. In this occasion, her hymen is so vulnerable to be broken. If she is being tested and it is found out that she is ‘not virgin’, it is more likely that the cause is from the sport itself. However, our society believes that once you are told that you are not a virgin, it means that you have done something bad and it is known that you are a bad person. Thus, a girl in the illustration above may be marked as a bad person too. It is so unfair right? Her psychological side can be disrupted and it will annoy her a lot. She is more likely to think that she indeed is a bad person because her society forces her to. In other words, the conduction of virginity test is can really affect students’ mentality and gives bad impact for them.
However, responding to the bad sides of making virginity test compulsory for high school students, there are also some pro opinions that agree with this issue. People may state that conducting virginity test is important because it can prevent students from doing free-sex. But these ideas are not necessarily true. First, it is so nonsense to say that a lone virginity test can really prevent students from doing free-sex. There is no solid proof proving that conducting virginity test can decrease the number of students doing free-sex. There are many reasons that trigger students to do free-sex, one of them is environment. Environment plays an important role to build someone’s characteristic, especially the vulnerable ones like high school students. For instance, if a female high school student is already involved in a free-sex because of a certain condition like her environment, then what? Does virginity test will stop her from doing that? Of course not. We can stop or decrease the number of high school students from doing free-sex by giving them a good understanding from the very beginning, giving them a good atmosphere of their environment, and also giving them a good spiritual understanding that doing free-sex is wrong.  Thus, in other words, although we are conducting virginity test, it will not help anything because they are not trained by their characters. Let us take an example from an illustration; there is a female high school student who had involved in a sexual intercourse before. When she is told that she will be tested in a virginity test, it is more likely that she takes it easy. She will not be bothered by the result since she is aware that she is not a virgin anymore. Later, she will not hesitate to keep doing free-sex since that virginity test does not change anything at all from her life. Thus, how can we say that conducting virginity test is a very effective way to suppress the rapid growth of free-sex among high school students?
To sum up, why conducting virginity test should be forbidden for high school students is supported by some strong arguments, such as that conducting virginity test is against human rights and it can affect students’ mentality. Yet, some people have a different perception responding to this issue. They state that to conduct virginity test is really important for high school students because it is an effective way to minimize the number of free-sex among students. However, if we take a really good look, conducting virginity test is really ineffective an unimportant for high school students. Thus, virginity test should be forbidden for high school students since it really is unnecessary.
