Batu is a one of the best tourist destination in east
Java. It serves you many enjoyments such as exciting theme park and good foods.
Besides, Batu serves you with many fascinating and pleasant views that you can
get in other places. However, these past 4 years, Batu which is located
surrounded by mountains has change. Batu has been suffering in rapid change of
climate. It suffers from high temperature and lack of water sources. Looking at
this condition, Batu is suffering from bad pollution and cannot be identical as
de klien Switzerland. Thus, Batu
should not be added and built any of buildings, especially hotels or housings
since Batu needs more green vast area.
Before we talk about the bad pollution in Batu, first,
we should know of Batu itself. Batu is one of cities in east java. In recent
years, Batu has become one of the tourism destinations in East Java. It is
located 680-1.200 meters above sea levels with temperature is about 15-19
Celsius (Wikipedia, 2015). Surrounded by many mountains, Batu has been popular
with its fresh air. Thus, many people have been visiting Batu in recent years
to enjoy the fresh and beautiful view served by Batu. Since Batu is led by Edy Rumpoko, the mayor of
Batu, Batu has developed in tourism aspects. Seeing the potential of Batu, he
has been allowing many developments of tourism destinations in Batu, such as:
Jawa Timur Park I, Museum Satwa, Museum Angkot, Museum Tubuh, Eco Green Park,
Batu Secret Zoo, Batu Night Spectacular, Batu Wonderland, and Kusuma Water Park
(Wikipedia, 2015). Besides the development of tourism destinations, ER, the
nickname of Edy Rumpoko, has been allowed the development of housings. Because
of this, Batu has nominated as the city with the most rapid development in
Indonesia (unknown, 2011). Looking at this fact, Batu indeed was the resting
place which is very peaceful.
Literally, Batu was a resting place for the family of
King Sindok (Wikipedia, 2015). He ordered his servant named Mpu Supo to search a vast area which was
near from mineral sources. With his superpower, he found Batu and did babat alas (build something new in a
vast area) (wikipedia, 2015). In another version, Abu Ghonaim, the soldier of pangeran
Diponegoro was the one who did babat
alas in Batu. Since Batu is surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Anjasmoro,
Mt. Arjuno, Mt.Kawi, Mt. Panderman, and Mt.Welirang (wikipedia, 2015). So that Batu
indeed has beautiful and fascinating view. As a result, many people are
visiting Batu to refresh their stress for Batu has fresh air. This can be
proven in the colonial era that Batu had become the key island of theNetherlands
East Indies Empire (PakBill,
2008). Uder Dutch rule Java became known as the garden of the tropics, one of
the most efficiently governed tropical islands in the world. It was a wonder of
colonial management, a land of punctual railroads, well-run schools, vast
agricultural estates, swank mountain resort (PakBill, 2008). Dutch people built
resting places named villas or even stayed in Batu (wikipedia, 2015). For Dutch
people were very fond of Batu, they called Batu as klein Switzerland (the miniature of Switzerland). This nickname makes
Batu is popular in the world. However, nowadays with the rapid changes such as
the development which is increased in every aspect. It slowly-but-absolutely
changes Batu. Thus, it affects the nickname of Batu as de klein Switzerlandwhich healthy and refreshing. Looking from this
recent condition of Batu, some citizens of Batu argue that Batu is suffering
from bad pollution.
The reason of why Batu should not be built and added
any of buildings is because ofthe bad pollution that is happened in Batu. In
the past, Batuis generally known as city with cold and fresh air with the rate
of oxygen is quite high. However, nowadays, the fresh air is hastily going
down. The cause is the numerous numbers of developments in Batu such as
housings as well as public facilities such as park etc. To build a building, it
needs a vast area. ForBatu mostly consists of forest so they need cut the forest
down which means the number of trees which produce oxygen for human is reduced
too. According to the secretary of LK2L, Dhani, a tree only produces oxygen for
two people. Suppose we cut a tree, those two people will lose their right to
get oxygen appropriately (finity, 2011). In the year 2000, a year after Batu
officially became Kota Batu; Jatim Park,
the very famous playground in East Java was build. The building of Jatim Park, need a vast area around 11
hectares of the east slope of Mt. Rinjani (unknown, 2012). The 11 hectares of
forest which consist of a hundred of trees are cut down. It can be concluded
that a ton of oxygen produced by the cut-tree are being reduce numerously. The
development of playgrounds and hotels makes the contents of oxygen in Batu are
reduced too. As a result is the increment of temperature.
Batu is famously known with their numerous number of
mineral water resources. For example are the water resources in Songgoriti and
hot water resources called Cangar
(Wikipedia, 2015). However, the number of water resources in Batu apparently
going down. At first, Batu had 111 points of water sources but in 2005, Batu
only had 53 points of water resources (Anggadha, 2009). Batu provides water
sources for 2/3 for east java citizens. PDAM
of Batu (the manager of water resources) provides 150 seconds/liter every day
and 60 seconds/liter for only Malang citizens (Anggadha, 2009). The rapid
increasing number of citizens and the low maintenance of water sources are the
main cause of why the number of water sources in Batu is numerously
reduced. As many people use water
sources, so are the water resources needed. In 2001, the number of citizens in
Batu was 168.155 people, but in 2011, the number of Batu citizens was about 214.321
people (unknown, 2013).With the increasing of Batu citizens in these past three
years causes the water necessity is high. In addition, the number of public
facilities and playgrounds which are built also need the water resources.
Besides, tourists who are visiting every year also consume the water resources
which cause the necessity of water resources is high; while the availability of
water resources in Batu is reduced over and over again. If it is drawn the red
yarn, another reason of why the water resources are reduced is the maintenance
of water resources (Anggadha, 2009). The pipes and other tools needed for
maintaining water resources in Batu was broken and there was no clear schedule
of when those pipes are maintained and fixed.
Mostly people may assert that Batu is still as refreshing
and healthy de klein Switzerland. However,
this idea is ridiculously unreasonable. As the refreshing and healthy de klein of Switzerland, Batu should
have fresh water, surrounded by the mountains full of forest. However, the
condition has changed. Pollution has been increased days and days. The temperature
of Batu has been increased. In 2011 the temperature of Batu was around 16
Celsius, yet in 2012, the temperature increased to around 24 Celsius (unknown,
2012). How a rapid speed of temperature increasing?! This condition also makes
the producing of apples, the icon of Batu, is reducing too. Based on research
held by student of biology of Brawijaya University, an apple tree can grow in
the temperature around 22,3-27,7 Celsius (Baskara, 2012). Regarding those two
data, we can conclude that apples cannot grow healthily anymore in Batu. It also
proves that Batu should not be added and built any of buildings. The reason of
why Batu has high temperature because the availability of green vast area is
reduced (unknown, 2012). Mostly, green vast area in Batu is built hotels and
tourism destination (unknown, 2012). Thus, trees producing oxygen is truly
downgrade. As a result, the refreshing air that in the past was had by Batu is
disappeared.
In conclusion, Batu as de klein Switzerland does have fascinating and beautiful views that
we can easily fall in love with. People argue that Batu still refreshing and
healthy. However, their argument is totally wrong. Batu as one of the best
tourism destinations has changed. Many public places, hotels, housings are
being built. Consequently, the green vast area and forest are being cut down
days and days. As a result, the water resources and the supply of oxygen are
reduced. To fix and prevent the further detriment, we can do actions. First, be
economical in using water resources. Second, choose to walk instead of riding
motorcycle. Third, start to plant plants in your surroundings to let more trees
live and produce more oxygen for us. And for the best way out, Batu should not
be added and built any of buildings, especially hotels or housings since Batu
needs more green vast area.
