e-Learning the Peculiarity and the Drawback

e-Learning is a process of learning and teaching that aids by the used of electronica devices. In this current time e-learning is massively burgeoning. If some years ago our growing up brothers or sister reading printed books and handout, nowadays we use our gadget to download, search, and examine the materials. Students and teachers are actively participating in e-Learning process. Usually students bring their devices such as laptop and flash disk to the school and do the exercise online. Some teachers in modern schools even do streaming to interact with their students. They send the exercises through the line and also set the due time to compile that works. Some students may say that e-Learning helps them a lots to receive the materials taken from the Internet, but some others may say that e-Learning is not the best way to compete the achievement in learning process. There are actually two majors of e-Learning process; negative and positive. The following paragraphs will explain you about the peculiarity and the drawback of e-learning process.
The first peculiarity of e-learning process is that it enhances student ability to deal with sophisticated gadgets. Research has shown that technology enhance literacy development, impact language acquisition, provide greater access to information, support learning, motivate students, and enhance their self-esteem (ACT, 2004; CEO Forum, 2001; Boster et al., 2004; Mann et al., 1999; Tracey & Young, 2006; WestEd, 2002). E-learning process requires students to use their gadgets wisely. They have to operate their laptop every single day their teacher gives assignment. It makes them habituates with the use of Information Communication and Technology in learning process. Then it also encourages the students to study because the use of technology makes them want to explore the new things. Basically, in the Internet we will find the sources that written in foreign language. It will also help students to acquire the language. By using e-Learning method the students will get the encouragement, language acquisition and computer ability as well. The second benefit of e-learning process is that it is the way more efficient to work without any print out paper. According to Haeck, using less paper can help us to save trees and it also decreases pollution, by doing email, there will be no courier who driving to your home and polluting the air, she continues. Nowadays, the use of paper is the real environmental problem. We have to cut trees before making paper. It is so ironic when we cut trees to produce papers than we do not use it wisely. Very often students throw away the remains of blank pages in their other sides’ paper. We all know that the decreasing of the trees will affect productivity of oxygen. From where we can breathe if we cut all the trees in our surrounding? That is the reason why we have to consider using e-Learning rather that to print out our assignment in a great numbers of paper.
The first disadvantage of e-learning process is that it decreases the interaction among student and teacher. The interaction in learning process is so critical since it helps the students to perform well in order to achieve their goal. Palloff and Pratt (1999) argue that the “keys to the learning process are the interactions among students themselves, the interactions between faculty and students, and the collaboration in learning that results from these interactions” (p. 5). Interaction is the process of knowing one another in order to reach purposes, take advantages or the others intentions. In interaction process there is a condition where one individual influences the others, or the others influence the one. In learning process we need to share our ideas to the other elements. Take for example, a student, as an individual showing his works to his teacher. Then the teacher gives marks, comments, or notes. This condition is actually aimed the student to get the feedback from the teacher so that he will not be a passive element in the learning process.    The interaction in e-Learning process is so limited it is because the students and teachers are not meeting face-to-face. The impact is that some times students will feel lazy to their work. It is because they think that whether they do the works or not, the teacher will not realize. It is indeed will give a treat for learning process. The elements are demanded to be actively participated in the learning process. They are not supposed to only sit and watch over their personal computer or gadgets and doing nothing for along the term. According to Roman Sahakov the second disadvantage of e-Learning process is that it is the main cause of the student distraction. Nowadays, ICT provides many attractive media for all people including students. When the teacher ask them to go find the materials, they will more likely to open their media first rather than searching the materials. As the effect they will left behind their duty and go find their own pleasure first. Very often they come with their late-submission duty, or the worst they will not do their task and forget it as nothing happen. To do the duty is imperial for students because it uses to measure the students comprehension about the materials. If they do not do the duty, the learning process will not run effectively.
There are two benefits of e-Learning process. The first is that It can be an enhancement for student technology awareness and it also an effective learning by using paperless method. Then the use of technology, also offers another peculiarity such as acquiring new language for the language in the websites is usually comes from foreign language. Asides from major positive, e-Learning also has two major negatives. They are interaction decreased, and student distraction. As a modern people we have to use the Information Communication and Technology wisely. We cannot avoid the development of technology so keep scrolling our button but do not stop thinking about your homework, duty, and assignment. Good luck, God blesses us all!
