Physical
Education or P.E is one of a subject in school that students have to take. Yet,
there are still some contrary opinions arise against this fact, P.E only wastes
students’ time, P.E will not make any difference in students’ health and
students cannot be forced to join P.E. All of those arguments have the same
main idea that P.E is not necessarily to be included in students’ subject. Some
people believe that students still can do others useful things instead of
joining P.E, like studying, hanging out with friends and even helping their
parents cleaning the house. In other side, however, there are some stronger
arguments standing in believe that P.E should be mandatory for students for
some basic reasons like P.E indeed makes students healthier, P.E teaches
teamwork skill and let students have fun finding their activity talent.
The first reason why
students should join P.E is that P.E makes students’ body in shape and healthy.
Accord with its name, Physical Education, P.E makes students move their whole
bodies and it will eventually make them stronger and fit. Students nowadays are
more likely to be obsessed because of the development of the era. For instance,
a student who is already finished the lesson that day, he/she will likely to
choose to open their social media accounts right after he/she gets home. That
is the only thing happening for the rest of the day. He/she also more likely to
eat junk food since it attracts people’s interest so much nowadays. There is
almost no physical exertion by the student nor does he/she have a healthy diet.
So, P.E indeed helps students to gain their healthy life which is so important
for every human being. In addition, students are required to have at least 30
minutes a day of exercise, but most students do not do that 30 minutes day
training. So, if school demands that students should join P.E, it will surely
improve students’ health. Another example, if we compare the fitness of
students who love P.E or join sport team in school with students who hate P.E,
it will come up the result that students who love P.E are healthier, fresher
and more fit in terms of appearance so that it is delightful to see them
around.
The second reason why
P.E should be a mandatory is that it teaches teamwork and let students have fun
finding their activity talent. In P.E, we can find some sports that really sharpen
students’ teamwork skill, such as football, basketball, volleyball and many
more. To having a good teamwork skill is really important for students in order
to face the future life, in the working environment for instance. They learn
how to communicate with their teammate in the right way and at the right time,
they learn how to make strategy in order to win the game, and they also learn
how to work with people with various types of personalities. P.E gives them the
opportunity to develop those competences. P.E can also be a media for students to
find what their real passion is. Take an example from the experience of a
famous volleyball athlete, Rendy F.T. He would not know that he would be really
good in volleyball if he had not joined P.E back in elementary school. He found
and developed his skill on volleyball in P.E class that later he really took it
seriously by joining a professional volleyball club. From this example, we can
assume that P/E takes an important role to discover students’ hidden talent
that they have not found yet.
Responding to the good
sides of making P.E mandatory for students, there are also some contrary
opinions that disagree with this issue. People may state that it only wastes
students’ time, it is not effective to improve students’ health and it is not
something that neither parents nor teachers can force the students into. First,
people may state that students should be able to rest after being on school for
a day rather than exercising by joining P.E. This idea really is absurd.
Students spend most of their time studying in school. It is not impossible that
they feel so bored and want some refreshment to clear their minds; and P.E is
one of the best refreshment they may encounter. How come? In P.E, students are
not only told to take the sport lesson seriously, they are also allowed to play
and having fun with their friends while doing the sport. By playing with other
students, of course they can release some pressure that they get from studying
math, economic or biology in school. It is more likely that they are able to
perform better in school after having some fun. In other words, P.E does help
to improve students’ performance in school.
Second, people may also say that P.E is not an
effective way to improve students’ health since it is only done in school. But
again, this idea is totally wrong. We cannot blame P.E if students only do exercise
in P.E class. P.E has already offered students an opportunity to be healthier.
Students can exercise at least once a week if they join P.E in school, and it
is done regularly. How that can be ineffective? P.E is really effective to give
students the chance to better themselves in terms of health, and it is left the
decision of the students whether they want to take a further step by continue
exercising outside the school or not. Last, people may state that P.E is not
something that neither parents nor teachers can force the students into, yet
this opinion is nonsense. P.E is really closely related to health, and health
is something that everyone has to posses in order to live prosper. We will not
be able to do anything perfectly if we are not healthy. From the presence of
P.E, students still have the chance to gain that health. Thus, forcing students
to join P.E is a really great move since it is for their own sake somehow. Then
why won’t we push our students or children to do something which is really
beneficial for them?
To sum up, why P.E
should be mandatory for students is supported by some strong arguments, such as
that P.E makes students’ body in shape and healthy, P.E teaches teamwork skill
and let students have fun finding their activity talent. Yet, some people have
a different perception responding to this issue. They state that P.E is not
necessary for students because P.E is such a wasting time, P,E is ineffective
to improve students’ health and P.E is not something that parents or teachers
can force students into. However, if we take a really good look, P.E is really
essential for students seen from several aspects, like health, performance,
skill, etc. Thus, P.E should be a mandatory course for students since it gives
many benefits for them.
