Indonesia is a developed country with the second rapid
increasing of citizens in the world. The rapid increasing of citizens is not
counterbalanced by the availability of job opportunities. Consequently, there
are many people who are jobless and become non-productive. As a result, people
try to keep the pot boiling by doing things that earn money for their living,
for instance is begging. Begging is a common phenomenon in Indonesia, whether
in suburb areas or in the city. People whose the jobsare begging to other
people is called as beggars. Beggars come from different backgrounds. Mostly
they are people who are in low income with no specialized skill. Beggars in
Indonesia are distinguished into 4 types: beggars, street beggars, singing
beggars, and car polishers. However, these past 4 years societies were shocked
with the confession of a beggar who are rich and earn money around 1 million
rupiahs per day. This issue becomes very controversial. It brings bad impacts
to other people in terms of welfare and safety. Thus, we should not give the
beggars money directly.
Firstly,
in terms of welfare, giving beggars money lays the root of the increase
unemployment in this country. Giving money to beggars is considered as “the
trigger” of making them unproductive. Since we give them money when they ask
to, they will keep asking money to us. They will not try to change their life
by working appropriately. They will not develop their creativity and their
skill that later, in the future, give them or even other people opportunities
to change their life to be better. Instead of working hard, they tend to be beggars
since it is easy and trustworthy job. They only need to pretend to be pitiful
by wearing inappropriate clothes, carrying a broken bag made from receptacle
clothes, and begging to the passengers. What an easy way to get 1 million
rupiah!. One real example that I have once experienced is in April, 8th
2015, when I was sitting while doing my assignment, I was startled by the
shouting of a female beggar asking money to students who were sitting there.
She shouted, “Mbak minta uangnya mbak,
buat beli beras mbak”. “Tuan minta uangnya
tuan buat beli beras tuan”. What I made even more shocked was how a
not-too-old lady carrying a fancy handbag and wearing good dress, asked money
to the student who were far away from their hometown which even forces them to
manage their finances. Automatically, I refused to give her money since I
speculated that she was not proper to be given money.
Secondly,
in terms of safety, giving beggars money causes bad traffic jam and sets off
the high crimes to occur. Beggars usually work in crowded places such as
traffic light in order to get people’s attention so that people will be able to
see them and give them money. Giving money to street beggars causes bad traffic
jam. Street beggars will wander around traffic light asking for money to the
drivers and riders that cause their vehicles are unable to orderly move
forward. The drivers and the riders will drive and ride rudely as they are not
patient to wait the traffic moves forward. Consequently, it causes bad traffic
jam and accident for the beggars themselves or the other drivers and riders.
The real example of this case is happened in Batu, East Java. A disable male
beggar always begged in the junction near from Lippo Plaza, Batu for past 4
years. He was unable to walk so that he used a kind of skateboard in order to
move. He asked money to the drivers and riders in this junction. People used to
give attention to him so that they rode or drove their vehicles slowly even the
light turned green. As a result, it caused bad traffic jam in this junction.
Some
people argue that giving money to beggars will bring good impacts to them. It
will help the beggars in terms of their welfare and their safety. By giving
them money, it will help them to fulfill their daily needs. This statement is
not true. Beggars are one of theresult of unemployment people for we give them
money when they ask to, it means that we, unconsciously, let them become
unproductive and jobless. As a result, unemployment-the main problem of this
country indeed is still increasing. Instead of giving the beggar money, we can
give them some staple foods such as rice, flour, or egg, to be processed by
them so that they still can fulfill their daily needs and they become creative
to processed raw staple food to become something edible.
Another
assumption is giving beggars money may help them in term of their safety.
Street beggars and singer beggars, the types of beggar in Indonesia, mostly
work in the junction where vehicles are passing through. They ask money to
drivers and riders while they are waiting the light turns green. By giving them
money soon after they beg for, it may help them to leave as soon as possible so
that they can be prevented to be hit by the riders and the drivers. This
assumption is fully wrong. Driver’s attention will be divided into two things
which danger the drivers as well as the passengers. Since mostly people give
the street beggars and the singer beggar money, other beggars will gather in
that junction to earn money by being beggars. As a result, it makes the traffic
jam even worse.
In
a nutshell, giving money to the beggars directly is fully considered an unwise
action because it causes unemployment to hold out, it dangers people’s safety
in the road, and it is the trigger of high crimes to occur. They do not need to
work hard and end up being a scumbag. It attracts people’s attention in the
junction or road which endangers themselves and the passengers. In addition,
giving beggars money directly lead to the high crimes to
occur for beggars want people’s sympathy by doing anything. Considered from
above statements and reasons, giving beggars money directly should not be done
by societies in this country.
